Earlier today in Franklin, Tennessee, under a picture-perfect blue sky, I had the honor of officiating a simple civil ceremony for a young couple who’ve already lived quite a story—at just 21 and 22.

They stood with their daughter beside them, all smiles, full of love and calm confidence. I asked how long they’d been engaged. “Two years,” they said. Then the groom added, casually but proudly, “We’ve been together since grade school.”

After the ceremony, as I was packing up, he looked at me—then at his new wife—and said something simple but powerful:
“People think we’re too young… but when you know this is your person, you just know.”

They had written their own vows—raw, honest, and tender enough to bring a tear to my eye. There was no crowd, no venue, no elaborate setup. Just two people choosing each other in the presence of their child and the law. And honestly? It was beautiful.

As a Tennessee notary, most of my work revolves around real estate closings, estate documents, and remote online notarizations. But on days like today, I get to wear another hat: wedding officiant.

There’s something so special about these small, meaningful moments. A sign-and-say-I-do ceremony might be simple on paper—but for the people in front of me, it’s one of the biggest days of their lives.
