If you’re searching for a California online notary or wondering whether California allows remote online notarization (RON), you’re not alone—and you’ve come to the right place. A question that is often asked is, “Is RON legal in California?” Another common question is, “Can California notaries do RON?” The short answer is yes and no. Let me explain.
California notaries can’t perform RON yet. California passed the law authorizing it (SB 696), but it only becomes operative when the Secretary of State certifies its technology project as complete, or on January 1, 2030, whichever comes first. As of today, there is no start date, and a California notary cannot notarize online.
California accepts notarizations performed by out-of-state notaries. Under California Civil Code § 1189(b), an acknowledgment taken in another place is valid in California if it was taken under that place’s laws. And under Government Code § 8232.1, a notarial act performed in another state has the same legal effect as one performed by a California notary, as long as the notary was authorized under their own state’s law. I perform every session from Tennessee, where I am commissioned as an online notary — so I can take your California files today.
✅California accepts valid out-of-state online notarizations right now
✅You do not have to wait until 2030 to use Remote Online Notarization
✅If the notarization follows the laws of the notary’s state, it is valid in California
✅California Civil Code 1189(b) recognizes acknowledgments taken outside the state when lawfully performed there
✅States like Tennessee already allow commissioned online notaries to perform RON for California signers
✅Many counties, including Los Angeles, San Diego, and Orange, already accept electronically recorded documents
✅ If paper recording is required, a certified paper copy can be used
✅Title companies can use secure online notarization now while staying compliant.
I am on Central time, which means I extend your closing day. Your late-evening Pacific signing is still my evening — a 5:00 PM PT escrow signing is 7:00 PM my time, and I can take it. Your early-morning Pacific signing is mid-morning for me — 7:00 AM PT is 9:00 AM my time. When your California signers need a late or early signing, I’m still working.
If you use Qualia, search for Notary Force and assign the closing to me.
If you use Snapdocs, search for Laura Scherr and assign the signing to me.

Yes it is! Under California
Not yet. California plans to authorize its own notaries to perform remote online notarizations (RON) by 2030.
Must be a US driver’s license, state issued ID card or a US passport
Under current Tennessee regulations, remote online notarizations are limited to U.S. citizens. If you need to notarize documents online for a non‑U.S. citizen, I can connect you with notaries in other states where this is permitted.
Yes. California Civil Code § 1189(b) and Government Code § 8232.1 give a notarial act performed by an authorized out-of-state notary the same legal effect as one performed by a California notary
Since January 1, 2025, a certified tangible copy of an electronic record may be submitted for recording (AB 2004). Confirm with the county for your specific file
Yes — that’s 7:00 PM my time, and late-evening Pacific signings are part of my coverage. I can take early and very late appointments.

We stop and regroup. Under Tennessee’s rules, once a signer fails KBA with me, I can’t try again with that signer — not even on a different platform — so I look to the network of notaries I work with for a different notary on a different platform to try again. If the signer still can’t pass after that, the title company will be contacted immediately to determine what to do next
